Another article was the September 8 edition of the New York Times which stated “The story of the exploit of the PC-565 came through today disclosing that the U-boat was destroyed so swiftly that she had no opportunity to fight back. In less than 10 minutes the Navy report stated she plunged with water pouring through the open hatch of her conning tower. All of the crew except the commanding officer were trapped below deck.” Joe also served in the D-day invasion as a operator of a LCI landing craft shuttling troops to the beach.
