Charles A. Hanlon, age 98, passed away peacefully at home on June 21, 2025.
Born on April 26, 1927, in South Philadelphia, Charlie was the youngest and only boy in a family of four siblings and a proud member of St. Edmund's parish. He graduated from South Catholic High School and attended Villanova University for a semester before enlisting in the U.S. Navy, where he served aboard the USS Albemarle (AV-5) in the Pacific theatre in the defense of the Philippines.
Charlie was predeceased by the love of his life, Dorothy (Foy) Hanlon, and by his daughter Joanne. Together, he and Dorothy shared 72 years of marriage filled with laughter, devotion, and faith.
A dedicated husband and father, he is survived by his four children, eleven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Charlie was deeply committed to his family and his Catholic faith. He passed down strong values - faith, hard work, humor, and an appreciation for life’s simple joys. His ability to make others laugh was a beloved family trait.
Charlie began his career with the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier and was later sworn in as postmaster of two offices in 1981. He was a lifelong sports enthusiast, coaching in the Police Athletic League and serving as a licensed umpire for adult softball and baseball games. A true Philadelphia fan, he was known for watching multiple games at once, with one TV stacked on top of another so he wouldn't miss a single play.
He was also a master Pinochle player, winning the night before he died. He was renowned for his ability to count all four suits - a skill he proudly took to his grave.
Charlie lived life fully and on his own terms, right up to his final breath. He left a legacy allowing his character and presence to live on in the family he thoughtfully nurtured and loved with all his heart.
Relatives and friends are invited to his Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, June 30, at 11:00 AM at St. Eugene Church, with visitation from 10:00 to 10:45 AM. Interment at SS. Peter & Pul Cemetery where he will be reunited with Dorothy.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Charlie’s memory may be made to St. Eugene Church, 200 S. Oak Avenue, Primos, Pennsylvania 19018.
