Martin J. Mclaughlin, Jr

Martin J. McLaughlin, Jr. age 89 passed away on July 19, 2022. Marty was born in the Meadows Section of Southwest Philadelphia on June 10th, 1933. He is predeceased by his Dad Martin, Mom Elizabeth (Simmons) and brother Paul. He graduated from John Bartram High School.

Marty was an US Army veteran from May 1953 to May 1955 and was stationed at Ft Rucker in Alabama. After the service he returned home and worked at General Electric (GE) and then as a Rigger at the Naval Yard in Philadelphia. He played semi pro baseball for Tinicum AC of the Penn Del League and later for Narberth of the Delco league. He met Mary (Mae) Walther at a school dance. They married on February 7, 1959 at St Barnabas and honeymooned at Mt Airy resort in the Poconos.

Marty and Mae started their life in Southwest Philadelphia where they two children Martin III (Marty) and Lori Ann. Marty worked as a Rigger at the Naval Base in Philadelphia and attended night school for ten years at Drexel Institute of Technology. He graduated in 1967 with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. Marty then worked as a Mechanical Engineer for the Department of the Defense, US Navy at Naval Ship Systems Engineering Station (NAVSSES) in Philadelphia. Marty worked there for many years and traveled to many countries helping to figure out issues with Naval ships. He retired in 1990 as a Director.

He moved to Broomall in the early 1970’s. Marty was active in the community of Marple helping to establish and refine the Marple Babe Ruth League. Where he enjoyed coaching and watching his son Marty play baseball.

He loved fishing and watching Philadelphia sports. He played softball for many Delco leagues until he was in his late 50’s. He had many disagreements with various umpires during his softball career.

He lost his beloved wife Mae in July of 2019.

His grandsons: Bryan McLaughlin and Rob Clark were his pride and joy. He enjoyed fishing and taking them places (usually museums). He was proud of both in their careers and lives. Marty did many road trips with his family and had a lot of fun and visited a lot more museums.

Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing on Monday, July 25, 2022 from 9 am until 9:45 am at St. Pius X Church, 220 Lawrence Road, Broomall. Funeral Mass to follow viewing at 10 am. Interment at SS. Peter & Paul Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Marty's name to the American Heart Association would be appreciated.
