Richard Joseph Schmid Sr

d. May 29, 2019

Richard Joseph Schmid Sr. ("Dick"), age 73, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on May 29th, 2019. Dick was the youngest of three sons of George and Madeline Schmid. Dick was not a native of the Philadelphia region, but has called the area home for the majority of his life. Born in Holyoke, Massachusetts, Dick came to Pennsylvania with his family and met Geri McGowan, who would eventually become his wife. He pursued his undergraduate studies at Rutgers University, where he graduated Cum Laude. He then enlisted in the Air Force and served four years active duty and two years in the reserves. Upon returning home, Dick and Geri married and had four loving children (Nicole, Richard Jr./"Rick", Sean and Patrick). Each of the children has gone on to marry (Michael, Nicki, Janet and Becky, respectfully). There are a total of twelve devoted grandchildren: Samantha, Madeline, Alexander, Aubrey, Julia, Jessica, Millicent, Ryan, Zachary, Claire, Grant and Eliana. Dick and his beloved wife Geri were married 48 for years. Dick believed education was a lifelong pursuit. He completed his MBA at Widener University and obtained a CMA designation while working. His understanding of finance led to a fulfilling career. He began his finance career with CertainTeed, but moved to specialize in healthcare finance thereafter. He worked as CFO for numerous hospitals until he obtained a position as CFO for Thomas Jefferson University. Since then, Dick's extensive experience in finance made him a valuable member of several boards and also a vital member of the higher education community through his work as an adjunct professor. Beyond his career, he was a man of God first and foremost. Dick's activities in this area are exemplified through his contributions and service to various charities (Saint Vincent DePaul Society, Saint John's Hospice). He attended weekly mass at St. Anastasia with his wife Geri and also contributed to the church community as a Eucharistic minister. Dick was best described as selfless, humble and a dedicated gentleman who loved his wife and family. He had a quick wit and he loved sports, especially golf and the Eagles. He also loved the ocean, especially in Sea Isle City. In addition, he enjoyed music, traveling and good company. There are so many who love him, he will be sorely missed! Viewing will be held on Monday, June 3rd from 9 to 10:45 am at St. Anastasia Church, 3301 West Chester Pike, Newtown Square, PA. Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11 am. In lieu of flowers contributions in his memory may be made to St. Vincent DePaul Society at Saint Anastasia's Church in Newtown Square, PA: https://saintanastasia.net/saint-vincent-de-paul-society
