Letter written by Ed O'Hanlon, Sr.:
My family wants to thank all of the doctors, nurses and medical staff at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital, the VA Hospital and the VA Home Care Unit including the Visiting Nurses Association, who have been conscientious and diligent in the caring for Jake's numerous medical issues to prolong his life. We also want to thank the Southwest Adult Center, Jake's "Friends" and the Organizations and employees at the Businesses, where Jake went to for all of your kindness to Jake over the years. There are too many to name, and I do not want to slight anyone by missing them. Jake was very knowledgeable and a great "Friend" to many people. Jake was always cheerful and enjoyed talking to and helping people through his kindness and generosity. Over the past 5 years, Jake's health has deteriorated severely as a result of the complications of Agent Orange from spending multiple tours in Vietnam as a U.S. Marine fighting in heavy combat for our country, the U.S.A. On Monday, July 18, 2016, Jake had a massive heart attack with my wife, Becky, and me at his side and died in front of the home where he grew up in Sharon Hill despite the valiant efforts of the EMT's and police from Sharon Hill, Darby and Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital. They all did their best, but Jake's heart and body could not take it anymore and just stopped per his heart doctor. Considering Jake's numerous medical issues, he lived longer than the doctors ever expected, which allowed many of us to enjoy his company for a few more years. Jake is at peace now and not in any more pain. Although I am Jake's cousin, he always told me that I was his "Friend" first, which is better than being a "Relative" and I feel the same way about Jake. Jake told me that you can't pick your "Relatives", but you can pick your "Friends" and that is why a "Friend" is so special. To all of you who considered Jake as your "Friend" and he considered you as his "Friend", thank you again for bringing joy into Jake's life.
Lastly, A special appreciation to Yvonne and Fay for their support to Jake and Mini (Jake's cat) of 9 years for that happiness that Mini brought to Jake.
Ed O'Hanlon Sr.
July 20, 2016 was Jake's Birthday. Jake would have been 74 years old.
